Telling Stories In Our World

I love when art meets trash, well you may call it trash, I will call it one of my favorite Italian words, scarti. Anyway, a convergence of castoffs and "collectibles" including cardboard lunch containers from a local school, gator board scraps and an assortment of 9" x12" art masters prints were mixed up by kids at the Mecca Public Library. Throw in some of last year's Christmas cards and yarn fragments, and they were well on their way to the rebirth and reuse of scrap.

As part of the library's summer reading program, I was invited to participate in their One World, Many Stories theme. The kids, of all ages, were encouraged to cut, rip and glue to create a collage that told a story. Take a look at their stories!

Living On The Edge For Earth Day

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2008, the United States buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources. Those would be paper, plastice, metal, glass and organic materials. We only recycled or composted about one-third of our discards. That is why at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery we practice the Four R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Responsibility every single day. We also believe that Earth Day is every single day, but on Friday, April 22, the nation's official Earth Day, we go all out and celebrate it! S.C.R.A.P. Gallery and CoachellaValleyGreen.com will hold its second Earth On Edge II at the Green Zone in Palm Desert, California. Earth On Edge II will kick off at 6 p.m. with a SCRAPPY Hour Reception, silent art auction and the premiere of BUGGED!, our insects as art exhibition. All the "bugs" have been created using recycled and found materials. Following the reception will be the soft opening of the Green Earth Film Festival showing of Carbon Nation, a documentary about climate change solutions "that doesn't care if you believe in climate change." The event is free, but donations will be thankfully accepted to benefit S.C.R.A.P. Gallery's programs for kids and the environment. For more information about Earth On Edge II, contact us at info@scrapgallery.org.

How Can You Spin Your Wheels?

Give me your tired and worn, your crumpled and torn. Yes, that is what we ask for at the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery. Let's reuse and recycle as much as we can.

As April approaches, this is the time that we get ready for our annual exhibition called Recycle Bicycles. Recycle Bicycles is an opportunity for all of us to call upon our inner or outer artist and create. Old bikes, not gently used, bikes that can no longer serve as a mode of transportation are turned into great works of art! If you have a once-functional bike that you would like to donate or recreate, please contact us. The first batch of 2011 sculptures will be exhibited at the Indian Wells Arts Festival, April 1-3 and then travel throughout the Coachella Valley at various locations. So start your creative engines and get your wheels spinning!
